Use the official Sheriff custody record and bond-information page to identify the current entry, then verify time-sensitive questions with the Detention Bureau or the controlling court. A bonding company cannot set or change the amount or type.
A displayed $0.00 does not automatically mean free release. The Sheriff says it can appear when no bond is allowed or when multiple charges share one case number. Some holds and custody categories are not bondable.
The three official bond categories
The Sedgwick County Sheriff currently describes three categories for bondable inmates. The category on the current record determines which routes are available.
- Cash: Any bond may be posted in cash, while some court orders require cash only. Personal and business checks are not accepted. The receiving court controls the final disposition of the money, and the Sheriff cannot refund it after posting.
- Own Recognizance (OR): A qualifying person signs a promise to appear under the controlling court's requirements. It is not automatic, and the Sheriff says there is no fee or cost for an authorized OR release.
- Professional Surety: The official page says a person listed for professional surety may use a bail bondsman or post the full amount in cash. A company typically charges a fee, and the agreement is a private civil contract.
Special holds and release timing
The Sheriff lists State Arrest and Detain Orders, State Parole Violations, Juvenile Holds and Warrants, and people awaiting Kansas Department of Corrections transport as not bondable. Domestic-violence bookings can include a court-ordered cooling-off period, and an out-of-state warrant requires an 18th Judicial District Court judge to set bond.
Posting an authorized bond begins a release process; it does not guarantee a particular release time. Facility processing, other holds, court orders, and verification can affect timing.
Before choosing a private bonding company
Compare written terms, not slogans or promised release times. Ask the provider to explain the entire agreement before anyone signs or pays.
- Confirm the current bond type and total through an official source.
- Ask for the complete fee, payment schedule, and every nonrefundable charge in writing.
- Understand collateral, lien, cosigner, check-in, travel, and cancellation requirements.
- Ask what happens to money or collateral after the case and after a missed appearance.
- Verify the person or company is currently permitted to write the proposed bond in the relevant court.
After release
Keep the release paperwork, confirm the next court date, and follow every no-contact, reporting, travel, testing, and other condition. A private surety agreement is separate from court requirements and does not replace legal advice.
